The existing dwelling was built as one of two semi-detached 3-storey mirrored houses in 2002 designed with a mixture of stone and red brick.. The main objective of the client brief was to find a way of linking the main living spaces (located at the 1st floor) with the generous south facing garden to the rear (located at ground floor) and improving the overall inside and outside relationship.
The new roof profile helps to link the ground with the floors first with the staggered roof planes that add unexpected light and views to the garden beyond. The spaces left between the planes are filled with triangular windows. A striking up and over window/rooflight which corresponds with a double height space brings light and views deep into the extension. To the rear a horizontal roof plane cantilevers to provide a sheltered space.
